The metal can be casted using two different methods including:

Sand Casting

Die Casting

Along with these methods, aluminum castings can also be made using other processes such as lost foam, squeeze casting, and hot isostatic pressing. However the most commonly used techniques are die-casting, permanent casting and sand casting. There are several factors that that affect the selection of a casting process in producing a particular aluminum alloy part. The most significant factors for casting processes are:


In terms of feasibility, various aluminum alloy castings can be formed using any of the casting methods. For a large number of castings, however, the features such as dimensions or design automatically suggest the superior casting method. As the metal molds weigh from 10 to 100 times as that of castings they are used to produce, most of the very large cast products are formed as sand castings rather than as permanent mold or die-castings. Small castings are generally formed with metal molds to ensure the dimensional accuracy.

Quality is also an important factor to consider while selecting a casting process. In respect to castings, the term quality refers to both the degree of soundness (freedom from porosity, cracking, and surface imperfections) as well as mechanical properties (strength and ductility).
