Copper Scrap

Types / Grades of Copper Scrap

Different grades and varieties of copper scrap are used for recycling purposes and to recover pure copper from the scrap. Given in the table below are some of the important grades / types of copper used in recycling.

Grade Description
No. 1 Heavy Scrap Copper It consists of clean unalloyed copper solids and must be uncoated. It may also include copper clippings, punchings, bus bars, commutator segments, clean copper pipe or tubing and copper wire over 1/16th thick but free of brittle or burnt wire.
No. 2 Scrap Copper It consists of clean unalloyed copper solids. May also include clean, oxidized or coated copper clippings, bus bars, punchings, clean oxidized copper tubing or pipe free of excessive solder and light gauze clean. It should be free of exuberant oxidation, ash, scale or brittle burnt wire.
Soldered Copper Pipe Soldered Copper Pipe includes assorted copper pipe with soldered ends or joints, free of bronze or brass or non-copper fittings.
Beryllium Copper It consists of clean beryllium alloyed copper solids, and may also contain punchings, clippings, bar or pipe, tubing & elbows.
Light Scrap Copper It consists of multifarious, unalloyed copper solids. May contain sheet copper, kettles, boilers, gutters, downspouts, foil and unburned hair wire. May include any thin gauze, high surface area solid copper, which only has surface oxidation.
Copper Turnings Copper turnings consist of unalloyed copper turnings borings or grindings, and may be contaminated with cutting oils.
No. 1 Bare Bright Copper Wire It consists of bare, unalloyed, uncoated copper wire, not smaller than 16 gauze.
No. 1 Copper Wire It consists of clean, unalloyed, uncoated copper wire, not smaller than 16 gauze.
No. 2 Copper Wire This grade of copper contains clean unalloyed copper wire, free of hair wire, brittle burnt wire and surplus oils.
No. 1 Copper Wire Nodules It shall include no. 1 bare, unalloyed uncoated, copper wire nodules, from a shredding or chopping operation, not smaller than 16 gauze.
No. 2 Copper Wire Nodules No.2 copper wire nodules consists of No 2 unalloyed copper wire nodules, from a shredding or chopping operation.
No. 1 Insulated Copper Wire It includes plastic insulated uncoated, unalloyed, (plated) copper wire. Copper wire should not be smaller than 16 gauze.
No. 2 Insulated Copper Wire No.2 insulated copper wire consists of assorted plastic insulated, unalloyed copper wire, free of double or heavy insulation.
No. 3 Insulated Copper Wire This grade of copper shall consist of assorted plastic insulated, unalloyed copper wire. It includes heavy or double insulation, plastic insulated telephone cable.
Copper / Aluminum BX Cable It includes plastic insulated copper wire, armor coated with a casing of aluminum.
Copper / Steel BX Cable Copper / steel BX cable shall consist of plastic insulated copper wire and armor coated with a casing of steel.
Copper / Fractional Electric Motors It includes electric motors & small copper coil windings from motors with size less than 1 horsepower.
Copper / Large Electric Motors It consists of electric motors & large copper coil windings from motors with size larger than 1 horsepower.
Copper / Sealed Motors It contains sealed electric compressor motors derived from common Refrigerators & freezers.
Copper Aluminum Rads It consists of unalloyed copper tubing surrounded by aluminum cooling fins that are derived from typical heat exchange radiators.
Copper Content It comprises of assorted materials, which have a copper content of not less than 30% by weight. It may include plating racks, commutators, armatures, irony copper, laminated items, electronic breakage, brittle burnt wires and copper scale.
